Giving Hope to South Africa’s Youth: One Field Guide at a Time
As we approach Youth Day this coming Friday, June 16, it’s an opportune moment for us all to reflect on the state of the young generation in South Africa. Youth Day isn’t just a commemoration of the past; it’s a prompt for us to consider the future – the future of the youth who represent the promise of tomorrow. Yet, for many of these bright individuals, their journey into the world of work is blocked by the towering barrier of unemployment. With over half of our youth unemployed, we’re confronting a crisis that threatens not just the livelihoods of individuals, but the health of our nation and our economy. There is, however, a beacon of hope within this sobering reality. We present a triumphant tale of transformation – one that defies the statistics and provides a shining example of how we can bridge the gap between education and employment. Just a few months ago, our first intake of 24 aspiring field guides, all from underprivileged communities, embarked on a journey through our Community Field Guide College at the More Kruger Campus (23) and NJ More Waterberg Campus (1). Today, each of these determined young individuals have passed their course, and are now fully certified field guides, getting ready to enter the world of gainful employment.

As we celebrate this monumental achievement, we are also eagerly preparing to welcome our next intake of 33 trainees in July. This initiative is not a one-off; it’s a sustainable, replicable model that offers a lifeline to those on the fringes, bringing them into the heart of our economy.

This journey is not ours alone; it’s a shared vision that brings together purpose-driven businesses and individuals who recognise the power of education and opportunity to change lives and communities. By investing in these initiatives, you’re not just contributing to sustainable employment; you’re fostering a long-term social development that promises to uplift entire communities.

Imagine the impact of having more field guides, educated and employed, hailing from the very communities we aim to uplift. Imagine the benefits that flow from this – not just to the individuals themselves but to their families, their communities, and the broader economy.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our partners MORE Field Guide College (MFGC), Timbavati Game Reserve, and The Timbavati Foundation, as well as our sponsors Tshikululu Trust, Anglo American Platinum, Italtile Foundation and Warthog Wallow. Their shared commitment has allowed us to expand our program into the Kruger region, sponsor more students, and provide vital professional development opportunities. This Youth Day, their contributions stand as shining examples of how collaborative efforts can spark significant social development, empowering South Africa’s youth, one field guide at a time.

Let’s commit to turning this vision into a reality. Let’s stand together in the belief that our youth is our future. We are committed to that future – and with your help, we can ensure that this is a future where everyone has a chance to succeed.
