Friday Hartley Shelter

In partnership with: MORE Family Collection Head Office, Johannesburg

The Frida Hartley Shelter houses vulnerable women and their children who have been left destitute and are the victims of poverty, abuse and neglect. They need assistance and support for a fresh start, empowering them to become independent. More Community Foundation (MCF) has provided the following support: Upgrades and renovations for their kitchen and bathroom; garden maintenance work; the installation of a jungle gym; the provision of food supplies; dental training and dental work for the women, along with training and development through a number of different programs. MCF will partner in their housing development project and solar system installation, while other upcoming plans include: partnering with retail sponsors to fund or support the shelter; skills development programs for the women; employment opportunities; health programs; and responding to other needs as they arise.

PROGRESS: Through our partnership with JK Dentist and Colgate, private consultations and subsequent surgeries have been made available to each woman with a diagnosed dental problem after the initial dental hygiene drive. To date, 17 women have visited the JK Dentist practice over 3 organised dental hygiene days for follow-up appointments, with 2 undergoing surgery. We’ve also partnered with Bean There Coffee Company to sponsor career barista training for 5 women from the shelter.
